Historic Tidbits
One of Lyndon Johnson’s first accomplishments as congressman in Texas was to push through a bill to authorize the construction of Mansfield Dam that is located near Lakeway.
Heritage Park is the home of the Spirit of Freedom Memorial and the Varner History Center. The Spirit of Freedom Memorial was erected in memory of all the veterans of Lakeway.
The Varner History Center building contains some original elements of the oldest standing building in Lakeway. This authentic rock room was once part of a Josey Ranch shack that housed guests who were crossing the wild Colorado river before the creation of the Mansfield dam.
Lakeway still has evidence of the native people who lived there prior to the coming of the white man, as many Indian mounds are located in the area. Indians native to the area were the Tonkawas, who made pottery and used the abundant supply of flint to make arrows and tools. Commanches from the High Plains,Apaches and Mescaleros from the San Angelo area eventually drove the Tonkawas away.

Interesting Facts
The Mansfield Dam is Colorado’s main flood control dam located 10 miles outside of Austin. The dam is 266 feet high and 7,089.39 feet long. It is 213 feet thick at its base. It was constructed from 1937 – 1941.
Travis County is named for William Barret Travis, the commander of the Texas forces at the Battle of the Alamo.
